Know the difference: waterproof, water-repellent, and water-resistant

All waterproof and water-resistant rainwear is water-repellent. Read that again. “Water-repellent” is the measure, and gear labeled as waterproof or water-resistant tells you how repellent that article is.

To make outerwear water-repellent, a DWR or PU treatment is added to the shell or infused with the article’s fibers. Water-resistant outerwear is designed to resist contact with light water (rain showers, snow flurries). Outerwear labeled as “waterproof” gives you the highest level of water protection.
